Spring Workshops

  • Fire by Friction (Grades 3-8)

No matches? No problem. In this workshop, students build a survival fire with friction tools and natural materials. They learn the properties of wood and tips and techniques to collect and process tinder and kindling and sustain a fire for cooking. They reflect on the properties of fire that Allah has described in the Quran.

  • Shelter-Building & Knots (Grades 3-8)

How quickly can you put up a tarp with an adjustable knot or build a log shelter for protection from a storm? In this workshop, students practice tying basic knots, learn the characteristics of efficient shelters and design and build real natural shelters using logs in the forest. Students test their shelters for strength and durability and play a live-action-role-play (LARP) game in teams using their shelters. They reflect on the materials Allah has provided us with to build our shelters.

  • Navigation and Compass Orienteering (Grades 3-8)

Discover the numerous ways Allah has given us to navigate the world. In this workshop students learn how to use the sun to navigate and how a compass works. They use a compass to determine direction, create orientation routes and locate hidden objects.

  • Tree Detectives (Grades 3-8)

Which tree’s sap is a fire starter? Which tree’s needles are rich in vitamin C? In this workshop, students learn how to identify the tree species around us, their characteristics and the specific blessings Allah has placed in them for our benefit. They use tree ID keys and simple tips and tricks to identify trees on a forest hike.

  • Pond Study & Aquatic Invertebrates (Grades 1-8)

How can we tell if a body of water is clean? In this workshop, students study the characteristics of aquatic invertebrates and their role in determining water quality. They wade into the creek with dip nets to collect, examine and identify aquatic invertebrates and use this information to determine if the water is clean. They reflect on our role in keeping the water that Allah has provided us with, clean and pure.

  • Insect Investigations (Grades K-6)

Do bugs make you squeamish? This workshop will dispel your fears! In this workshop, students learn the characteristics of an insect, go on an insect hunt in the forest and use checklists to determine if their creatures are actually insects. Students use their creativity to design their own insects that meet those characteristics. They reflect on the amazing varieties and abilities of insects that Allah has created.

  • Exploring Birds (Grades 1-6)

Can you identify at least 5 birds in your neighbourhood? In this workshop, students examine bird features and learn to identify common birds and their calls. Students go on a bird hunt and sit spot to watch and listen for birds in the forest. Students reflect on the amazing characteristics that Allah has created in birds.
